CHAPTER 11

Billie took the lead in her car, followed by Nolan in his large truck that was hauling her new home. She couldn’t believe this was her life. Sunlight gleamed off of the trailer behind Nolan when he pulled into the festival grounds and backed it into the space next to Asher’s fifth wheel.

“Whoever thought to add RV hookups to this area was a genius,” Nolan declared when he stepped out of the truck. “I’ll start getting you hooked up to the power and other utilities.”

“This is so great. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me already,” Billie said. “I can’t believe you not only got me my house, but you’re also the guy who is fixing all my food trucks.”

“Guilty,” Nolan said as he got to work. “Your grandmother took care of it all, though. I’m just the worker bee.”

Billie got the sense that Nolan wasn’t interested in taking credit, but she wasn’t going to let it go. “No way. I saw what the other eleven trucks look like compared to the taco truck. You do great work, and my grandmother picked the right person for the job. I just know it.”

Nolan shrugged. “Thanks, then, I guess.” The older man squatted down next to the rear tire of the tiny house and began hooking wires together. He looked up at her. “Pretty soon, you and I need to sit down for a spell and go over your wishes for the next round of truck repairs. Your grandmother left her instructions for the first one, just to get you started with all of this. But now, it’s all up to you to make it work.”

“No pressure, right?” Billie choked out a laugh.

“Lots to be done,” Nolan said as he worked. “If you just give me a few minutes, I’ll get you set up and then I’ll bring the keys inside for you.”

“Oh,” Billie said. It seemed this Nolan guy really didn’t want to talk with her while he worked. Some people didn’t care for small talk, and she couldn’t fault them for that, but she hoped that when it was time for them to actually work on the trucks, he was more engaged. “I’ll see you inside.”

On her way into the kitchen, Billie spotted Jerry in the doorway, watching Nolan as he set up her house.

“Hey, Jerry! Isn’t it great?” she asked, stopping to stand next to him.

“Yeah, sure,” he muttered. “Just great.”

Right away, Billie began to panic. She was new to the island and hopefully she hadn’t made the wrong choice. “What? What’s wrong with it?”

Jerry was suddenly drawn from his haze. He looked at her for the first time. “Hey, Billie,” he said. “The house is fine, just fine. I think you chose well.”

She looked at him, unsure. “Okay, so what’s the problem?”

“Nolan’s here.”

Billie stepped in front of Jerry, trying to make him focus on her. “Yeah, my grandmother paid him for a house for me. I just went to pick it out, and he was able to deliver it right away.
